Re: OnLive gaming

I think they need to talk to more ISP's and get them to remove onlive from data caps and traffic management like they've done with BT.

ATM on talktalk, once traffic management kicks in around 6pm, the quality goes from great to mediocre. :smileysad:

Re: OnLive gaming

There has been some discussion between friends about this service.

Our general opinion is that our Consoles do the job well enough.

Imagine playing the game, finally approaching the save point when...

ERROR 404 - Internet is Down

Least with a console you can play it while you wait for the internet to come back up lol

Re: OnLive gaming

well, i'm using the onlive service and it's great, until 6pm when BANG...network problems..disconnections and cant re-connect till after 12am...Talktalk's technical support solution to this? Change provider.....this is after they accused me of running pirate software that uses peer to peer connections (i play WOW,RIFT etc.) and blaming my pc for the poor connection, when i asked if they do any shaping/traffic management of my connection at 6pm they said "peak time, every one comes online then, thats why it goes slow." :smileymad: so everyone turned on their pc/game system etc. as 6pm exactly to connect? and then turns it off at 12am?

the onlive system is great, i have friends all over now that i play with when i can connect, a lot of them have no problems with their provider (they use BT) who don't cap the connection to it.

Spent over an hour on the phone and ended up being told to live with it or change provider....hows that for customer support..

Anyway, going to play other games till they (talktalk) uncap the connection and i can get back onto onlive..
Getting sick and tired of the Talktalk hold music....for the love of sanity, change it.....

also TT system isnt based off of time it based on how mutch traffic there is on your exchange so p2p can be throttled at midnight if there a lot of traffic
Anyway, going to play other games till they (talktalk) uncap the connection and i can get back onto onlive..

bt throttle p2p exactly the same in most cases worse then other providers

Re: OnLive gaming

true, BT do throttle p2p, but with onlive, they are the uk supporter for the system..just finished speaking to a technician at Onlive, they use all UDP traffic for the service, so if Talktalk is capping or using network management that effects this, people will suffer network interference and high packet loss (which i do). I've even made sure every port i need to use is open, so i know it is the ISP. Anyway, if you do get a chance to try it, Onlive is great fun, i especially like the demo mode, where you can try nearly every game for 30 minutes, the full game, not a demo or restricted part of a game.
If you do get online, look out for me, "Hondahoorz_Mk2"

Re: OnLive gaming

p20 throttling would not cause packet loss as it does not remove any packets have you tried lowering your mtu? as TT shapping is supposed to be able to tell the differnce between gaming packets and othern p2p packets

Re: OnLive gaming

do a ping test to google.co.uk then befor you press enter type-n 50 to do 50 pinhs to see if your getting some packet loss

Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
Packets: Sent = 73, Received = 73, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 20ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 20ms

so the conection its self is fine it looks like TT system isnt detecting the packets corectly as gaming ones possibly as this is a new service it may be worth posting this in the support section so the oces can send a few examples to networks and hoepfully sole this issue

Re: OnLive gaming

Lol, I guess I don't have to phone up customer support. It's such a shame, because now I can't even play the games I bought until unsociable hours.

Onlive really need to get more support from ISP's. Being unplayable from 6pm-midnight is just stupid. Meh, there's always the weekend to play.

I thought it was my poor 4mb connection which was causing the problem, but after getting fibre installed today, I know for sure its talktalk thinking onlive is a p2p program. :smileysad:

Re: OnLive gaming

It sounds good but i stopped reading here -
In terms of pure picture quality the service is not going to equal a game from a PC or games console in the home, but the attraction is that it is on-demand and with the PlayPack subscription you get access to a wide range of games.

I would rather have less games and better quality, the console will be staying for a while.

there's another issue,

One hours play with a 2 Mbps stream would result in you downloading 0.9 GB. At the higher quality 5 Mbps rate this would result in you using 2.25 GB.
