D-Link DSL-2640R router losing connection - low SNR (Greenford Exch. LWGRE)

I am experiencing intermittent internet disconnection with my DSL-2640R router.. Started about September with intermittent loss of internet connection. The ADSL sync is still up when I log into the router to check the status of the connections. The router also takes longer than before to display it's web pages.. sometimes up to 20-30 seconds.

I spoke to TT 2nd line support and they made some changes to the setup, and for a while the internet connection appeared to be holding up OK!. But from friday last it started again with the same problems (intermittent loss of the internet connection.. ADSL sync OK!). There has been time when both the ADSL Sync and Internet has been down. I would normally soft-reboot to router to re-establish the connection.

Today 07:05 came to use the PC and the internet led was off which is normal if no one is using the system. PC connection to Router OK.. showing connection up local IP address OK.. however the router internet status led failed to change.. logged into router 'Device Info shows no IP addresses.

I am currently using a borrowed Netgear DG834 (no wireless) to see if makes any difference.. The 1st thing I noticed with logging in to the router, is the web pages comes up much faster in my browser. I have configured the router and all connection is now up. I will leave it on the Netgear router until tonight or tommorrow to see how stable the connection is over that period.

With my previous ISP I used this Netgear Router and it always gave a stable connection. As both my son and daughter has laptops with wireless connection, it is convenient to use the new router(DSL2640R) as my main and only access to ADSL connection.

Debbie,

Ok I will monitor this connection through until 20:00, using the current router Netgear DG834.. If that is ok then I will switch back to the original router DSL2640R..
So far the connection has been Ok.. Any drop link prior to this update is due to my intervention..

Here is my current connection stats..

Hi
The connection has been Ok for 19 hrs using the Netgear Router. I have checked the logs and there is no drop sync, ADSL link or errors during that time (note this router is wired only). The changes you made have improved the quality of the connect speed.. so that is a positive on this setup.

I have now reconnect the original DSL2640R router to see how the connection performs. I am updating this message via this connection. I also have the router's web page up, and it is very slow downloading those.. web pages from the internet once unto to the site is quickly responsive.

I have noticed that the Lan Stats for this router shows a high error count for wireless even though there are no wireless devices accessing currently.
Could this be due to the channel used for wireless access, or a router problem, a little help here would be appreciated to fix that problem..

On the original connection issue, I will monitor how it performs over the next 24 hours using the DSL2640R..

Cheers

Justin

Hi,
Sorry for responding so late..

Well I checked the DSL2640R router logs this morning and it shows loss of link about 05:00 am. I have a printout of that log. It may have dropped between my checking at 08:20 and the time shown in the log below. I have no way of checking an extended log.

Here is the System log checked 16:50

It shows the link failing again.. It does not mean much to me. Maybe someone can enlighten me here.. Could it be that keep alive is wrong and needs changing.

Hi machanch,

The number of drops seems to have reduced considerably. I've amended the profile to 24isnr15 to try to get rid of the last few drops. Could you continue to monitor please? Stats are now:

Downstream Rate 11195 kb/s
Upstream Rate 722 kb/s
Downstream SNR 14.8 dB

Cheers
Em x

Hi Em,

I had a drop of the link about 02:44 this morning. The link came back up and was up for approx 13.5 hours and suddenly dropped. I guess that was due to the changes you was making at the time.
My last setup showed the SNR as 11.6dB and I saw Download Speed of between 12000- 13000 kpbs
Does your log show how often the link has dropped in the last 24 hours?

Could you tell whether it is a issue with the IP or the ADSL. As whenever I have see the link fail the ADSL Sync is always up.

PS: I notices that when I used the Netgear router to check the service I stayed up and did not lose the IP.

The DSL2460R has the ADSL Idle Time Out is default=30.
Is that used as the keepalive for the link?
