However, according to a spokesman for Phorm, the way the opt-out works means the contents of the websites you visit will still be mirrored to its system. Profiler hardware (see network diagrams here) will simply not categorise the pages or attempt to serve up target ads.
![]() So let me get this straight. Anything which isn't sent over a secure HTTP connection will be viewable by Phorm regardless of whether you opt in or opt out? Last edited by TTCustomer : Thursday 06th Mar 2008 at 09:37 AM. |

As I understand it we run the servers in the same way as we run Traffic Shaping servers, proxies and spam filters.
They are purchased and run in house and therefore are not disclosing information to a 3rd party. But then again I'm no legal expert, I'm just a techie sat at a desk ![]() I think we shall see where TalkTalk stands, by the information that is sent out to all subscribers in writing, before scanning is implememted explaining exactly what is proposed. It will not be good enough merely to give an opt in/out choice to people who don't frequent this forum, and who have no idea what they are opting for, or what phorm is and does. My thanks to TalkTalk customer for raising this issue. It would certainly have passed me by!

I met with Matt earlier today and he said there is a few options which could be taken (which i've now forgotten). He should be on later tonight to give you all an update.

Assuming my notes are correct, here goes ... this is the response

There has been a huge amount of speculation about Phorm and the possible involvement of Talktalk with their service. This is the current situation. |

By making the service Opt In, we feel the onus remains firmly with Phorm to make the service useful and compelling enough that subscribers will choose to join it. If it fails to do this, it will itself fail.
This is great news, exactly as it should be, choice made by the customer. Can TT please ensure that when/if the time comes we get plenty of notice, with a simple to use, clear format for making the choice. Thank You Matt & TalkTalk, I now know which ISP provider I shall be a customer of at the end of my 30 days, Well Done! Last edited by halifax50 : Friday 07th Mar 2008 at 04:36 PM. |
