i beg to differ on that score, i used to pay for Norton ad guess what used t get viruses thru, so ditched that for KIS and that was fantastic didnt have any trouble wi that apart from it costing money and affecting speed test results, now i use FREE Avast and what do ya know, doesnt hog any resources, doesnt affect speed results and more importantly i have never ever had a virus/worm/trojan or the likes infect my PC

so free definitely is just as good, if not better, than paid versions.

quite often the only extras ya get wi paid versions is the level ov support...

Well said Mark. I too used the Free Avast for about 5 years without any problems but a TT "Bright Sparks" visited me replaced my router and ditched Avast. I wasn't at home for the 1st 30 mins of his visit and he was on the point of leaving when I arrived. He told me he'd changed the router and ditched Avast because that was what was slowing my PC down. Only after he'd left and I sat down to the PC did I notice that all the time he'd left it on without an active AV application running. Anyway I didn't believe him about Avast but since I was now TT plus member I thought I would use the Talk Talk security application and ditch Zone Alarm as well.

I think calling my engineer Bright Sparks is flagrant misuse of the English language.

Couldn't agree more.

I used to use Norton (many years ago) until I realised what a massive resource hog it is and the fact it doesn't really provide any added protection over free utilities.

For a home user (and thats the key point I think) the free options are by far the best. You can get free utils that will cover all the options any paid software will provide and the difference in resource useage is negligable.

Personally I use Microsoft Security Essentials (free) alongside Malwarebytes Antimalware (free version) and Spybot Search and Destroy (Free) and I never have problems with virus or malware.

F-Secure
Praveen my talk talk f-secure security was badly installed the firewall worked partly and the a.v.protection was non existant so I was trying to uninstall it. Your links didn't work thanks to the f-secure firewall not being set properly but I sorted that out and got the whole damn lot uninstalled Now I found I couldn't install the f-secure application by saving it and double clicking as instructed but I eventually got it installed by running the download instead of saving it.

Downloading and installing the initial updates would challenge anyone's patience but thank God I hadn't a hammer close to hand because now everything seems OK, touch wood.

Praveen I followed your link but cannot download unt1.exe unless I register with 4shared which shouldn't annoy me but it does. Who are 4share and why does f-secure need their application? Why do I need unt1.exe? My Talk Talk Security, f-secure, seems to be working satisfactorily so what would downloading unt1.exe do to improve it?

Praveen thanks for your help

Regards

Peter

4shared are a file sharing site, they never used to make you register, but I believe they have started to do this, I use them myself to store files for others to download, including some for talk talk customers, it is a safe site.

You could try this link for a direct download, it may not work but try it anyway; (I have account so get a direct link )

If your AV program is now running properly then you do not need to download and run it at all
