Hello all,

As you may have noticed I am a bit of a gadget freak, I have just replaced my two 17in LCD`s with two 19in LCD`s, it makes watching lost on my PC soooo much better......."I can watch lost and post on TTM" :D :D :D :D

Anyway now that I have manged to get that done I am looking for some new gadgets to play about with and I was wondering if you guys had any ideas of some cool stuff?

You'd only need one of those for watching 'lost'.

One of your small ones'll do for TTM:D

Keep the gadgets you have and put them to better use. Have a look what you can do with a bit of tweaking with a desktop environment running gentoo

It gets better as it goes on.

Hi Stephen
Have a look on E Bay you can buy all sorts of gadgets.
Just seen a 'lie detector' (maybe you could get TT to pay for) and incorporate it in this forum. That way when people answer 'yes' to things like 'have you checked your internal wiring' you can tell if they are lying and havent bothered, hoping problem is something else that can be fixed without any effort on their part.

Think i may have found my next purchase, a laser keyboard (http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/)Hi Stephen..No disrespect meant..I know that you are PC savvy...but this piece of kit promises much and delivers little!!.The concept is innovative I agree and the sales pitch promises lots, but thats as far as it goes.!...I had a call from a mate who is always at the "cutting edge" when it comes to new hardware etc;...Went round to see him and found him sat on floor midst' a pile of " torn out hair and broken teeth caused by excess gnashing":D:D.!!..Setting up a reliable projection angle is a nightmare:mad::mad:..If you don't get it right your keyboard is forever responding with"wrong keystrokes" We gave up and he got a RMA authority to get a replacement..that arrived quickly but displayed the same issues exactly!!..I don't give in easily and when we did get a reasonable laser projection pattern.....the keystrokes were still providing an unacceptable level of errors..Hang on to your pennies ....It really isn't worth the hassle !!

Snap, we got one in for eval and it just doesn't work well enough to use on a long term basis for data entry or even e-mail. Great for a demo booth or to be cool though.

My latest "gadget" is a replacement for my clunky and really unreliable Buffalo TeraStore.

Its a QNAP TS209 (http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=83) NAS (network attached storage) device.

In addition to just being a file storage device that sits on my network it has

raid mirroring
remote replication so I actually replicate part of my data to a remote QNAP in my friends house and vice versa. the data is encrypted at the remote end meaning if one or other of us lose our development files then they should be still available
built in TownkyServer so I can share my media around my house to all my DLNA compliant devices
FTP access
HTTP server including PHP and MySQL
Remote access to all my files if I want so if I get to work I can log on to my QNAP and HTTP or FTP download that important document or upload a document to view at home.
Download Engine. I can start an HTTP or FTP download of drivers or a Linux distro via bittorrent from my PC and actually have all the work happen on the QNAP so I can switch my PC off and find it there in the morning
Web photo albums. I store my pics to my QNAP and it will produce a photo gallery if I want it.Fantastic bit of kit and works really well. They have forums like this and if you raise an issue their tech guys are on it in a flash.

My favourite thing is that I don't need my DVDs accessible anymore, I buy one transfer it and store the box on bookshelves in the spare bedroom where they look impressive. Then I can use my player to view files without swapping disks.

Next thing to get rid of is my Netgear EVA8000 - a terrible piece of kit which promised loads and just doesn't work but Netgear just don't care.

I was going to put it on Ebay but i closed my PayPal account in disgust at their terrible treatment of a claim I made, They just waited 3 weeks and then closed the claim. I had offered pictures that clarified the dispute and they never asked for them. When I rang up to complain they said we'll re-open the dispute. I asked if it would make a difference and they said they would just close it once I had sent the pictures anyway but if it made me happier then I should send them. Nice ! moral of this story, don't use PayPal !

Saw one similar on Komplett's site at around £240 mark..Can't recall if it was the Pro version though..Does yours have the NetBak Replicator for backups as part of the package..If it does ..and you've tried it..Does it work well ?

The QNAPs are amazing ... as I said before I never saw the need for golf apart from the crazy variety. Now I feel the need to try it but as I can't play I keep giving it a miss.

I am testing out Windows One Care :o Its for a friend honest.

I have used for quite a time now especially the 'clean up'.
Never had a problem cleaning up my 'registry' (always was a 'risky' thing to do).
Normal 'program uninstall' often still leaves entries in 'registry'.
How ever being a 'belt and braces' guy I always create a 'system restore point' before I run.

Don't worry, the chance of me getting a ball in to one is zero.

I'll probably never get round to playing it though.
