Okay - what is 21CN PSTN which has a switchover target of Q2 in 2011 at my exchange?

There's a fairly extensive Wikipedia article on it here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BT_21CN

but (in simple terms!) what will this upgrade mean to me? And will it be unique to BT or will it effect Talktalk customers too?

Sam knows.

In simple terms if BT can't get their present network up & running properly what chance of they of managing this.

At least I'm safe in the knowledge that on LLU I won't be transferred.

My exchange is currently transferring to LLU with an estimated completion date of this Saturday - I should be safe too!

Found this thread looking for something else, who designed this website ?

Just as a matter of interest, BT's 21CN network is basically them ripping out their old kit and moving their lines over to newly installed Huawei MSANs ... sound familiar ?

Wouldn't be so bad if they replaced 'Huawei' with something a bit less 'poundland'.:D

I had a chat with a OR engineer last month and he was telling me that they are only installing fibre "21stCN" to new builds and they don't have any plans to replace existing copper, I guess for the majority of us the 21st CN wont actually make any difference :(

So, 21st century from the exchanges, early 20th century from the majority of customers homes to the exchange

Can understand BTO not wanting to replace all that copper, it'd cost fortunes, but it'll have to happen eventually, or change the entire way broadband is delivered.

Mind you, it still impresses me that POTS delivers the speeds it does. I remember reading years ago that 56k was the absolute physical limit of speed on POTS lollollol
