Just had an update from an engineer who was working on the problem tonight. The official report doesn't come out until tomorrow but I thought I would post an early "heads up".
Members were unable to connect to "mail.talktalk.net" meaning that mail collection via POP3 was impossible.
Users of e-mail clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Evolution were unable to collect e-mail.
Users of webmail were unaffected.
The faulty equipment was rectified and is now under close scrutiny for the next 48 hours.
The mail storage centre and the POP3 farm were responding normally and had raised no alarms but customers were reporting being unable to connect to mail.talktalk.net.
Investigation showed that mail.talktalk.net was not accepting connections for large periods of time although there were nearly 40,000 members using the service.
Further investigation showed that the load balancer at the front end was exhibiting strange symptoms with its CPU usage cycling between almost 0 and 100%.
The software was crash dumped and the services restarted. The load balancer returned to normal operation.
The crash dump logs have been sent to the vendor for further analysis.
The load balancer is now under intensive monitoring for the next 48 hours.
