A modem with incorrect configuration will cause intermittent problems with web based e-mail, secure sites and uploading things like photos.
It can also be responsible for an intermittently slow connection.
There are articles on MTU and TalkTalk Performance, HG520S Wireless Router will not configure using CD and E-mail, Can't send attachments that talk about the problem, but who wants to read about it if you can fix it in just a few clicks? After all the less you want to read then the less I have to type and that's good for us all.
Flip over your modem router and check the underside. Does it have a label which reads "Broadband Wireless Router, EchoLife HG520s"?
If not then this article does not apply to your modem router..
If the labels matched then you have a modem router that may be incorrectly configured so now we are going to guide you through checking the settings on your modem router.
When you click the link to access the router's WAN Configuration Page it will open a new window and you will be asked for a username and password, enter "admin", without the quotes, for both the username and password and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see something similar to the following.
I have highlighted the two areas of interest in yellow and the key bits are the two numbers. One is the value for TCP MSS Option and the other the value for MTU Option. It all sounds scary stuff but all you need to do is use the table below to see what to do based on the values shown by your router.
| TCP MSS Option | MTU Option | Action? |
|---|---|---|
| 1391 | 1431 | Leave Settings Alone |
| 1392 | 1432 | Leave Settings Alone |
| any other | any other | Change Settings |
If your values were wrong then you need to change settings so, in the two fields, enter the values:
TCP MSS Option : 1392
MTU Option : 1432
When you have done this it should look like this so press "SUBMIT" to save the values away to the router. The router will think about it for a few seconds and redisplay the same page. Once this is done then you are fine so you can close the configuration window and carry on using the internet. It may take up to 90 seconds for your router to connect back to the internet so be prepared.
Congratulations. Your MTU Problems should be a thing of the past.
