HG520S Wireless Router will not configure using CD

Print E-mail

If you are trying to configure a wireless Huawei HG520S router using the TalkTalk supplied Connect&Go CD and it fails then there is an alternative.

It came with a booklet entitled "an easy guide to setting up your wireless broadband". Flick to page 13 where it talks about installing for mac and follow those instructions but using Internet Explorer (your browser) where it suggests using Safari. One point to note is that the manual misses a vital step and fails to get you to set the MTU to 1432.

if you don't have the manual then a quick run down of the instructions are here

INDEX

ENSURE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER

To configure the router you need to connect to it. You have two options here, wired or unwired. Wired is the easiest, just use the supplied network cable (usually red) and plug it into LAN1 on the router and plug the other end into your PC. All being well after about 30 seconds you should be able to progress to the next step.

If you want to connect wirelessly then get up the list of wireless connections and you should see an unsecured one called "TalkTalk520", connect to this and once connected proceed to the next step.

CONFIGURE THE ROUTER TO ACCESS TALKTALK

  1. open up the correct router admin page by browsing to http://192.168.1.1/WAN.html
  2. when prompted enter the username and password, by default these are both "admin". Without the quotes obviously.
  3. Under "Login Settings" on the main screen enter  your TalkTalk username and password. Your username is usually your telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. (eg This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and your password will be on the welcome letter you were sent. If you don't have the letter to hand then grab a pen and paper and ring TalkTalk's password reclaim line (0870 087 5562) from your home phone number and you should get your password. Write it down CAREFULLY paying attention to upper and lower case and numbers.
  4. Further down the same page you will see two fields "TCP MSS Option" which should be set to 1392 and MTU Option which should be set to 1432.
  5. Press SUBMIT to save this

This should set up your router so its able to connect to the internet so if you are intending using your router "wired" like this then this is all you need to do. If you want to be able to use wireless then you need to set up your wireless connection.

CHOOSING YOUR WIRELESS SECURITY TYPE

Wireless security is essential. Please do not use your wireless connection "unsecured".

WEP-128 security is compatible with most computers. it is the default option used when TalkTalk routers are set up. If you have older computers they may have problems running WPA2 security so you should choose this option.

WPA2-PSK security is very secure and is the security level I user on my wireless connections. It works with the latest Microsoft operating systems so if your computer is only a couple of years old then it should work with yours.

CONFIGURING A SECURE WEP-128 WIRELESS CONNECTION

  1. Open up the correct router admin page by browsing to http://192.168.1.1/home_wlan.html (or click the link for direct access)
  2. If prompted enter the username and password, by default these are both "admin". Without the quotes obviously.
  3. Scroll down to SSID, initially its set to "TalkTalk520", and set it to something that you will remember. This is the name of your network and will be visible to everyone. Try not to make it your surname or address, choose something else. MAKE A NOTE OF IT.
  4. Where it says "Authentication Type" choose WEP128bits and the router will have a little think and present you with a section entitled  "WEP".
  5. In the "WEP" section ensure that "Key#1" is selected and then enter a pass phrase. This must be 13 characters and/or numbers long. This is your wireless password so, again, make sure its not obvious and MAKE A NOTE OF IT.
  6. Scroll down and hit SUBMIT to save this

Your wireless config is now complete.

CONFIGURING A SECURE WPA2-PSK WIRELESS CONNECTION

  4. Choose your security type where it says "Authentication Type". I use WPA2-PSK and this should work if you have a modern computer.
  5. under the WPA-PSK section ensure the is set to TKIP and then enter a pre-shared key. This is your wireless password so, again, make sure its not obvious and MAKE A NOTE OF IT.
  6. Scroll down and hit SUBMIT to save this.

Your wireless config is now complete.

 All Done

All done ... your router is now configured and secure. You should be able to use you computer and see the network name that you entered in step 3 against the SSID. Select it and it will ask for a passphrase, password or pre-shared key (terminology differs but its all the same) so just enter the phrase you entered at step 5 and you should be good to go.
