There are many reasons why you may have problems installing your broadband. In most cases it goes fine but in some cases you get problems.
We spoke to Mark, an experienced technical support person at TalkTalk, and he gave us his top 10 list of problems that people experience when installing TalkTalk.
So here they are, in no particular order, the top 10 problems that cause installation of broadband to fail.
On your letter you will be given a go live date. If you attempt to install before this date then it will not work. Its tempting to install as soon as you get all the equipment but please don't as it won't work. Also, on the go live day it could go live any time during that day so just because it doesn't work at 7am don't assume that it won't work.
Attempting to install broadband on a PC that is not up to specification will lead to problems and will not work. Make sure your PC is up to the task by checking the minimum specifications on the TalkTalk website
It sounds simple but take a moment to read the instructions. Go through them from start to finish and make sure you have everything you need to hand. Have your password letter ready, make sure you have all the cables you need and spare sockets to plug them in to. I find it easy to place the modem where it will end up and have the cable and power in place ready to plug in when asked.
Following on from reading the instructions it surprising how easy it is to miscable the modem. If you don't connect it to the PC correctly or you miscable it into the phone socket then it just will not work. Make sure you read the instructions before attempting to wire it all up.
These little devices ar essential to the correct working of your broadband. See our Guide To Microfilters for more information. The most common faults are either not installing them at all or installing one for the modem and then leaving all your other telephone devices plugged into the phone system without them.
The piece of equipement that everyone forgets about is the Sky Digibox. If you have Sky and are connected to a phone line then remember that this needs a microfilter too.
Attempting to install broadband when your are not logged on as administrator will fail. If you need to know if you have administrator permissions then follow these simple checks for windows XP.
Right click on the START button. If you see a menu option called "Open All Users" rather than just "Open," then the account does have administrator permissions.
If you don't have permission then you need to use a different user on your PC that does have permissions. On some PC's the previous broadband providers software, ie Tiscali, Orange etc, can cause a conflict with the TalkTalk broadband setup. Make sure you uninstall it before trying to install TalkTalk.
At the moment the Connect & Go CD is not compatible with Windows Vista. If you are running Vista then you will have to configure the connection manually.
If you are not using TalkTalk supplied hardware then it is important to make sure that it is compatible with TalkTalk first. Some of the more popular equipment from the early days of broadband is incompatible with the newer TalkTalk service. If in doubt then use TalkTalk provided equipment.
Such a simple mistake and yet its so easy to do. Double check your password and make sure you have CAPS LOCK off before you type it in.
So those are the top ten issues that Mark comes across every day, follow the instructions and double check everything and hopefully you will have trouble free broadband.
