The EchoLife HG520s is an ADSL modem and router suitable for connecting up to four PCs or Apple Macs to a standard broadband line.
If you configured your HG520s router using the supplied Connect & Go CD it performed additional steps to make the router more secure.
If you configured your router manually you can also lock down the router in the same way using the following commands, unfortunately these commands must be done through a TELNET console and not through the friendlier HTTP session.
Your router is now even more secure.
MAC OSX
- open Finder from the menu
- press the SHIFT-COMMAND-A keys at the same time to get the list of applications up
- Open the "Utiliies" folder
- Double click on "Terminal"
- A window will open with a prompt which may look something like "mycomputer:~ JohnSmith$"
- Type in telnet 192.168.1.1 and press the return key and after a short delay it will say "Connected to 192.168.1.1 Escape Character is ^]"
Windows 2000/XP
- Hold down the WINDOWS key and press R
- A dialog box will open and in this box type TELNET 192.168.1.1 and press the RETURN KEY
- A window will open with a title which reads "TELNET 192.168.1.1"
Windows Vista
Unfortunately Windows Vista doesn't have a telnet client switched on by default so you need to enable it first as a one off. If your system came with one then make sure you have your Vista disk to hand just in case you need it although I haven't see it needed on the machines I have tried so far.
- Press the WINDOWS key to open up the windows menu
- Choose Control Panel
- Choose Programs
- Choose Programs and Features
- On the left hand side click "Turn Windows Features On or Off"
- In the box that appears tick "Telnet Client" and press OK
NB make sure you tick "Telnet Client" and not "Telnet Server"- A box will appear saying "Microsoft Windows, Please wait while the features are configured. This may take several minutes". Being Vista it really can take several minutes but eventually the progress bar will move. If its taking some time then you might want to take this opportunity to go and make a cup of tea
- Once the progress bar box has disappeared then close down the Control Panel windows and you are ready to continue by following the instructions for Windows 2000/XP above
